Rasmus' congregation started with nine people in 1991 and has grown to 9,000 at the church, located at 2019 Crawford."One thing I knew immediately was that I made it to the place that I was born to serve in," Rasmus said. "The right set of circumstances, the right moment, any of us could find ourselves without somewhere to live."At the Bread of Life, Rasmus and his team provide for the often forgotten. "We have to raise about $2 million a year just to do this stuff, to keep going, just to keep this going," he said. His project serves more than 7,000 meals a month, providing nine tons of fresh produce to hungry families and being there in case of emergencies. The building opened in 2000. Before that, meals were served out of the sanctuary.Rasmus said the early days demystified the church."Church is how we love in spite of our differences," he said.In his mid-30s, Rasmus said he saw the light."When the light came on, I discovered that I could live a different life," he said.Guided by his wife, Juanita, also a pastor at St. John's, Rasmus turned to a life of good for others, evident in all that St. John's gives -- food for the hungry, medical and dental care for the homeless, and HIV testing."We test after worship services on Sundays in this building. One hundred people on a typical Sunday will come by here to get an HIV test," Rasmus said. "I definitely don't receive this alone. There are people throughout my life and throughout this ministry who have really, really done the work."The congregation also works with the Hilltop United Methodist Church in Zimbabwe, and in India, Turkey and Ethiopia to provide food to the hungry.
