Homelessness
There are more than 20,000 people homeless every day in Houston, Texas. In 1993 the Bread of Life began providing servives to the homeless community in the 1,200 sq.ft. former parsonage next door to St. John's Church which was renovated to accomodate a shower, laundry, and medical clinic.

DayBreak- The $1.2 million facility was constructed in 1999 through a generous grant from the Houston Endowment and the Brown Foundation. Everyday hundreds of homeless men and women enter through DayBreak's doors seeking hope and refuge. The facilty provides shower, laundry, hot meals, food distribution, case management, and limited medical services.

  • HIV  ( 3 items )
In response to the HIV/AIDS crisis and as a result of a rash of funerals caused by the virus in the early 1990's, the Bread of Life began offering HIV Testing and Prevention services in 1993 through a partnership funded by the City of Houston's Health and Human Services department. Our first HIV Outreach team member named Stan Phil tested thousands of men and women launching the HIV Division at the Bread of Life. Today the COPE Team (Counseling, Outreach, Prevention, and Education) moves throughout the Houston area reducing HIV risk through education. The team offers HIV testing on Sundays after services through an innovative program called "Get Tested Sunday."
  • Hunger  ( 3 items )
Beginning in 1992 several volunteers began serving one meal per week to the homeless community in the Sanctuary. The demand was so great a second meal was added months later. By the spring of 1993 the Bread of Life was serving a hot meal seven days a week.  The agency today serves over 8,000 hot, nutritious meals per month to Houston's homeless population.

In the days following Hurricane Katrina that devastated New Orleans sending hundreds of thousands of Gulf Coast residents to the Houston area, the Bread of Life responded by entering into a partnership with the Houston Area Food Bank to distribute fresh produce to affected families. Every week the Bread of Life distributes over 9 tons of food to hundreds of hungry families.
